When I was young I always wanted to have purple hair, but my parents would never let me. I always swore I'd be the parent who would let my children express themselves more fully than my parents ever did. Now that my youngest actually wants to have blue hair I'm very divided. I'm leaning towards letting him. Is that OK for him or am I only letting him because I wasn't allowed.

His peers will think it's awesome-- the only thing you might have to worry about is what other adults will think about you. I suppose to some people, blue hair is just step one on a road littered with rock 'n roll, drugs, and loose women. I feel that as long as it's not suggestive or inappropriate, there really isn't any reason not to let him do it. If he really wants to do it, buy the kind that washes out. But I believe that it's perfectly fine for him to dye his hair, as long as you say no to things that you are not in his best interest. I don't think this will harm him or make him think he can do anything.

However, as a liberal individual if I were in you shoes I would sit down with my child, ask him/her why (s)he wants to dye his/her hair, and if (s)he can give me a reasonable and passionate answer I would discuss the reponsibilties of dying his/her hair (such as proper upkeep and possible taunting from peers) and if (s)he seems to understand and is still willing...then why the heck not? I'd go ahead and dye it. Besides, you can take the color away if (s)he acts up; and if (s)he is responsible once he gets tired of it the color can always be cut or just grow out. No harm, no foul. Don't go permanent though. Try to find some washable or semi-permanent products.

You were a child so of course your parents did not let you make adult decisions............. you should be that adult you are being and continue in your decision. When you were a child you thought as a child so of course you said what you would never do as an adult, that was a child thinking......... Now you are an adult and you can think on the adult level. So your decision should stand firm.......... you need to make the best decision for your child as far as him being in school and the way he is presenting himself. My son always wants to grow his hair out and wear braids. I am a stylist and I don't think this is appropriate for school and for the image he needs to present. I don't want him stereotyped by these so judgemental people. So I tell him in the summer you can do what you like......but when school starts you will have a hair cut. So you can compromise......but some of that gel color that washes out and let him wear it on weekends or holidays or summer vacation. When school starts, he knows the rules.............Keep parenting, remember God put us in charge. You can always say when you get your own home, bills and job, dye your hair whatever color you want...............Good Luck.
