Chance? Useful adaptation? No one knows for sure, although there are many interesting theories. We do know that, for some reason, dark skin, dark eyes and dark hair are dominant traits - some scientists believe these traits will dominate in the world population over time until all other colors are driven out, and have calculated that the incidence of blonde hair will be completely eliminated from the human race within 200 years from now. Unless, of course, we crack the genetic code - in which case there will be a whole new meaning to the phrase "designer genes". So there you go.
