Why do so many Irish people have the odd combination of black curly hair and striking blue eyes?

It seems like an odd, although very attractive look. I've always found the girls in Dublin very appealing to my English eyes.

I'm from Ireland and I too have long jet-black curly hair with large vivd blue eyes. I'm told the original Celts who invaded Ireland generally were darker haired and bluer eyed then the Romans. The myth of the Irish being predominantly red-haired comes from the fact that the Vikings, Danes, Normans, and later the English each made their mark on our island. I think ypou'd find the English to be more freckely and red-haired than most of the native Irish Catholic population. Think of people like Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Michael Caine, etc., etc., and I think you'll agree with me that the English generally are lighter in colouring than we Irish.

I'm not Irish, but I had a close Irish friend (red head) and she told me that this is the true Irish type. The red heads probably get their genes from a more Viking type of ancestry, rather than the original Celtic peoples who inhabited Ireland.

It could be from DNA(keep being passed around) or Gens...

Ireland was invaded and occupied a number of times. Once by the Vikings; hence the red hair and blue eyes. Once by the Spanish; hence the black hair and blue eyes. Once by the Romans, hence the dark hair and dark eyes.

Like many countries, Ireland has a diverse gene pool, and almost any variation is possible.

In the Balkans you can find this combination as well. As well as some Celtic type, so called red hair and freckles. More puzzled?

Why do so many Irish people have the odd combination of black curly hair and striking blue eyes?

The Irish are light skinned from the primary Celtic ancestry and include the typical red haired. The black hair (Black Irish) comes primarily from the Spanish settlements from thier previous conqests. I thought most "black Irish" had pretty straight hair though.

I'm sorry I don't find dark hair with blue eyes very attractive. Blonde hair with blue eyes is more common and the dark hair with blue eyes isn't and that's probably the reason you find them intruiging. I have neither but anyway, that is your opinion.
